Bad finger - Without You (Demos, Outtakes & Rarities)

Demos, Outtakes & Rarities
1968-1975
recording info: various

soundboard recordings (quality: VG- to VG+)

ROB SEZ: Hands down, this is the best Bad finger rarities compilation I know. High-quality demos, rough mixes, alt. mixes & outtakes — with faux "Japanese edition" artwork thrown in for good measure. 49 tracks, none officially released, sure to please the group's many fans. (Apparently, all but the final 13 "bonus tracks" on Disc 2 were released on an earlier boot compilation titled For Pete's Sake.) Strictly speaking, this is not from ASH. But it was inspired by Don and the other musos at ASH who loved this band. Enjoy.

All the DJ intrusions have been removed, but I decided to keep most of the intro section. It includes a pretty good summary of the band’s history. HUGE thanks to Live Delay and Branko Cosic.

EVEN: playing together for 23 years.
Way past time for their music to be heard
ROB SEZ: WOW! I cannot believe my good luck finding this live set by Even in excellent sound quality. If you’ve been paying much attention to the blog this year, you know I’m a HUGE fan of this band. I'm posting this in the hope others will discover the musical treasure created by Ash Naylor & Co. If there’s only one new band you have time to check out, make it Australia’s amazing Even. A pretty good place to start: this video gallery of the band's singles (begin with 'Mayfair Laundry Bus', then move on from there). The bonus set is part of their opening slot for Midnight Oil in Wodonga earlier this month. It's a not bad audience recording that will please those who're already fans. It includes a previously unreleased new song, slated for the band's next studio album.

NOTEThere are guest vocals on some songs by Lisa Jenio and Lisa Mychols. Joel Vee on percussion. The correct title for tracks 11 & 12  is "Cris Craft".

ROB SEZ: Gotta love those Wondermints. Members of the combo got so good at making masterly pop music that Brian Wilson tapped them to collaborate with him in live performances and studio work. HUGE THANKS to Joel Vee for recording the show (that's him on shaker & tambourine -- see his comment below). We're also indebted to Mick for today's post, for assembling it & creating the artwork. Thanks also to Don for posting years ago at ASH.

Do bands have to pay extra for the psychedelic/swirly light show?
JUST WONDERING
ROB SEZ: I'm told Lilys tried to be an American shoegazer / dream pop band in an early incarnation. This live set suggests they've returned to shoe-gazing for their predominant style. Feel free to call it what you like. But if you're into moody, guitar-heavy, densely melodic songs with curious lyrics, Lilys might be your new groove. Check the sample, get the download, and enjoy. Big thanks & kudos to Jim M. for recording & sharing. There's more here; you just have to poke around to find it...

ROB SEZ: It's been quite a while since I've had something to post from Peter, so it's a delight to share one recent solo show and another from nearly 32 years (!) ago. On a personal note, I'm thrilled that Peter played one of my all-time favorite songs in his 2017 set: "She Won't Drive In the Rain Anymore" from the dB's Falling Off the Sky album. The dB's chose not to play it in concert, so it's great to hear Peter perform it for a live audience. Special thanks to Solar Wind for taping & sharing the 2017 set, and to whomever did the same for the 1985 show. I'm guessing the latter came to me via dB's Fan, though I cannot recall for sure.

Sloan - B-Sides (3 discs of 'em)

ROB SEZ: If you like the Canadian band Sloan, you're bound to find something here you haven't heard before. As with almost all ASH Tuesday posts, I am deeply indebted to Don at the old ASH blog. Speaking of Don, he has a new radio show featuring many artists that appear here and, of course, at his I Don't Hear a Single blog. Check out the radio show on Mixcloud.

MEGA THANKS to craigie for taping and to thehappyone for sharing.

ROB SEZ: The new deluxe reissue of The Queen Is Dead is great, and the live disc from a show in Boston, MA in 1986 is fine. But what I really want to hear is a show from this tour when the crowd is going nuts, and the band is on fire. If you have similar inclinations, give these a try.

Icecream Hands - Triple J Live 1999

Live at the Wireless
Triple J Radio
Melbourne, Australia
Dec. 20, 1999

FM recording (sound quality: VG++)

ROB SEZ: Icecream Hands is yet another under-appreciated Australian band that toiled away in the musical salt mines, crafting excellent but not widely-heard albums in the 1990s and 2000s. Closest musical category for these guys: guitar pop. Here's a superb live set, originally shared by Angelo at Power Pop Criminals. I missed out when it was first posted, but Mick came to my rescue recently (thank you, kind sir!). If you download and give a listen, you'll see why I'm thrilled to have it.

Played on the last night of the "Barbara Manning Explosion" tour of Europe. Barbara is backed by Joey Burns and John Convertino of Calexico. Both shows were taped by Miseryman & transferred by lonetaper. S.F. Seals show shared by Cyrus; solo show by blueschief. ALL PRAISES to them.

ROB SEZ: Artists like Barbara Manning and S.F. Seals (one of the many groups she fronted) are the true independents in indie music. Before Liz Phair, there was Barbara Manning, writing, playing & singing strikingly honest / idiosyncratic music that combined folk, rock, singer-songwriter, noise and pop so effectively that Matador Records said, "We need someone like that on our roster!" (S.F. Seals and Liz Phair both released albums on Matador in 1994, but Barbara had already been releasing albums on various labels for 5 years). If you're just discovering Barbara's music, you have a treat in store. Hot tip: NYCTaper has a 2016 solo show, in great lossless sound quality, HERE.
This classic S.F. Seals album was recorded about
7 months prior to the live set shared here..
