ROB SEZ: When this recording surfaced last year, B.S./LX fans swooned at the thought of a previously-unheard live show from 1974 … and deservedly so, because this is a solid performance and impressive sound quality for a mono audience recording 30+ years old (the performance is even more impressive when you hear what happened to the band's instruments and equipment just before they went on).

ROB SEZ: There just aren’t many rarities out there that weren’t included in the amazing Keep An Eye On the Sky 4-CD B.S. box set. If you’re a fan, go find the money (or just add it to your credit card debt) and plump for this puppy. I’ve included the only two listenable tracks from the otherwise utterly shambolic WLYX Memphis 1975 radio session (just found out that Jody Stephens was so disgusted with the session that he quit Big Star afterwards). The rest are quite enjoyable studio outtakes.

Repercussion: In the early 1980s, Gene Holder produced the debut EP and subsequent LP by The Individuals (with the latter engineered by Mitch Easter at Mitch’s Drive-In Studio). Later, Gene cut back his involvements with The dB’s (and eventually departed) in order to join The Wygals, which was formed with two members of The Individuals after the latter disbanded. Not long after The Individuals broke up, Glenn Morrow became an early-in-the-game business partner at Bar/None Records — the same label that released The dB’s Falling Off the Sky in 2012. Clear enough for you??

REPERCUSSION: I know of no direct connection between The dB’s and The Plimsouls. But if you’re looking for an approximate West Coast equivalent to The dB’s, you don’t have to look much further than The Plimsouls — whose music and talent deserve the kind of superlatives I’ve lavished upon The deeBs.

The Plimsouls’ 1984 tour was a reunion after band leader Peter Case left in 1983 to pursue a solo career. Case has said the 1984 tour was prompted mainly by the need to pay back taxes. As you’ll hear, though, The Plimsouls nonetheless played with their usual energy and gusto.
