ROB SEZ:  In light of my ongoing fascination with R. E. M.'s 1987 Work Tour, I'd been wanting to share something from near the start of the tour in Europe, but was coming up empty handed. Here now is an audience recording with unknown lineage, recently shared by TheWalrusWasPaul at REMTimeline’s Listen to Me forum. Nearly complete, the recording lacks most of "Superman" and a good chunk of "Just a Touch," presumably due to the tape flip. The only other audio blemish worth mention is the sound quality in the second half of the show, which takes a slight dip after the tape flip.

La Cigale today: an historic venue in Paris
I rate this recording VG- since you can tell it wasn’t made with high-quality gear. But it does have decent enough vocals and instrumental separation, and features the rough-and-ready sound you’d expect from R. E. M. on the Work Tour, playing in a small theater like La Cigale, which seats less than 1,000. You’ll hear an enthusiastic crowd, which thankfully does not distract when the band is playing. We’re indebted to “Walrus Paul,” one of the many unsung fans who keep unearthing their treasures for the rest of us to enjoy.

Lineage: lossless digital file shared by TheWalrusWasPaul at Listen to Me / REMTimeline —> Audacity for tracking, applying fades, normalization & DC offset, speed & pitch adjustment (1%), 1 pass of eq to adjust treble & bass frequencies, and loudness normalization —> FLAC

More to come, of course!
