ROB SEZ: When they first appeared in the mid-1990s, U.K. combo Gene was tagged as a more upbeat Smiths. There's some truth in the analogy, but I prefer to think of Gene as another excellent, yet under-appreciated indie band. In 2015, uber fan Lewis Slade assembled this 49-song comp of ROIOs. Think of it as companion to the 2014 deluxe reissues of Gene's studio albums, which feature plenty of B-sides, demos & live tracks. (There's no overlap between this, the reissues or the official John Peel Sessions comp.) Be sure to visit Lewis' quite amazing Gene fan site. There's a shed load of info and other goodies for new & old fans to enjoy. Huge kudos to Lewis for all the work he's put into it — and to members of Gene for giving Lewis the nod.
