Note: this is a recently-shared, speed-corrected edition of this recording, so you might want to give it a try even if you have a previous version)

REPERCUSSION: It’s probably not a stretch to say Chris Stamey’s life was changed when he went to New York City in 1977 to begin attending NYU and saw Tele vision and others in “the burgeoning CBGB’s rock scene.” Later that year, he connected with Tele vision guitarist Richard Lloyd and, with him, recorded the single “(I Thought) You Wanted to Know.” On the flip side was “If and When,” the first release ever credited to “Chris Stamey and The dB’s.” The following show gives you an idea of what Chris heard all those years ago…

REPERCUSSION:  Chris Stamey co-produced, mixed and played various instruments on The Parson Red Heads’ 2011 breakthrough album Yearling. Mitch Easter engineered and played guitar (and 12-string bass) on a couple of the tracks (see Blurt magazine’s story about the album and its recent re-release as a deluxe edition). The band also participated with Chris, Mitch and others in a Big Star Third live performance at last year’s SXSW festival in Austin, TX.

MORE ABOUT THE COMPILATION:

I’d been intending for some time to put together an audio compilation of all the British radio and TV performances that have never seen official release. I did this for my own amusement, but since it turned out better than I anticipated, I decided to share it.

Be prepared for quite a lot of variety in sound quality. That said, I think most listeners will find many, or even all, of these very listenable. I used the best sources I could find from an audio standpoint, lossless in most instances. Those interested are welcome to consult the comments section to discover the source I used for each track.

For the running order, I picked tracks that I thought sounded good before and after each other. Happily, the sequence ended up being mostly chronological. My apologies to fans of “Wonderful Woman” from the 1983 Jenson Session: I could not imagine it making a positive musical contribution to this compilation other than as a “bonus track.” The Xb blank track features 10 seconds of silence to create an audio gap before the bonus tracks.
